180 people in Southend’s first Great Pier Swim
28th September 2008
FUNDRAISERS have taken part in the first Southend Great Pier Swim to raise cash for Havens hospices.
More than 180 competitors slipped on their wetsuits and swimming hats to take part in the event sponsored by Outback Steak House in Basildon.
The challenge, to swim from Jubilee Beach to Thorpe Bay Beach, raised about £15,000 for both Fair Havens in Westcliff and Little Havens Children’s Hospice in Thundersley.
Hundreds of supporters and competitors’ family and friends lined the seafront as the swimmers completed the course on Saturday.
The swim, the first of its kind in Southend, was fully subscribed and the hospice hope to put on the event next year.
Havens Hospices would like to thank the 35 volunteers from Southend Canoe Club, the RNLI and coastguard for ensuring a safe race, and Tri N Swim Well and Thorpe Bay Yacht Club for donating wetsuits and facilities to the competitors.
